What if I am not satisfied with the work?

To give an example, a client asked for 10 articles and one of the keywords listed was “gold chain bracelets.” The article was sent back for me to revise with a note saying “the article is well written but one paragraph is off topic since it is more about gems than gold chain bracelets.”

When I was writing the article, I put in some related keywords about jewelry and gems but apparently the client wanted a more tightly focused article. That’s not a problem for me. I sent back the revised article within the hour.

How do I pay for these freelance writing services?

Here’s some personal information about me.

Biographical Background

I am a 35-year-old Filipina who was born and raised in Metro Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. I studied at the top schools here, including the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman where I got a degree in English Studies, major in Creative Writing.

First Writing Job

My first professional sale was to the local newspaper Isyu (the Filipino word for “issue”). I wrote an article on the UP Lantern Parade (pictured above, photo from the UP website), a yearly tradition in the Diliman campus where I was studying. I then became a the paper's resident student writer.

Jobs and Experiences

Since then I have had many different kinds of work. I have taught English at local schools. I tried my hand at selling computers. I worked at a call center. My writing jobs locally have ranged from doing free editing for a relative’s project to getting paid to stay at a five star hotel to document an event.

I have been to the houses of the richest people in the Philippines and I have interviewed many famous celebrities here. During my writing jobs, I have traveled almost the entire length of the Philippines from the north to the south.

I even went to Singapore and worked there for two years writing feature stories on community events. When I was there, I learned how to take photographs for my articles, which I had not been trained for before.

Hobbies and Interests

At home I like to play Facebook games and watch DVDs of science fiction and comedy films. I also read a lot of science fiction and fantasy.

I like to go to the local restaurants like the Chocolate Kiss, Trellis and Sizzling Pepper Beef. I am on the lookout for a place near my home that serves roti prata, a favorite of mine from my days living in Singapore.

Outsourcing in the Philippines - Cultural Compatibility Bridges the Distance

One key reason that is cited time and time again by US businessmen who outsource to the Philippines is the familiarity the Filipinos have with the US.

The cultural compatibility that Filipinos have with their former imperial power, the US – which is the largest source for BPO services – is an important factor.

Let us take a specific example cited to me by an operator of medical transcription services. Medical transcription is the transcribing of digital voice notes made by US-based doctors in India or Philippines. In this case, the patient goes to the doctor in the US and complains of stomach problems and the doctor asks the patient where his last meal was. The patient replies “Taco Bell”. The Indian transcriber is confused as fast food is not common in India and even McDonald’s has been forced to go largely vegetarian there. While the Indian is thinking about temple bells, the Filipino, whose country is dotted with every imaginable brand of fast food from the US, immediately knows what the patient is referring to when he says “Taco Bell”.

The article is very interesting and raises several good points. Filipinos are so familiar with Western brands and popular culture that it's easy for us to understand a simple thing like Taco Bell. English is so widely spoken here that movie theaters show all their Hollywood films in the original English with no subtitles or dubbed voices.

The Philippines was a colony of the US from 1899 to 1946. The Americans established the public school system using English as the medium of instruction. English is one of the two official languages and the Filipinos have absorbed a lot of American culture. Metro Manila is full of Western chain stores and brands like McDonalds, Starbucks, Levis, 7-Eleven, etc.

Cultural compatibility is definitely a plus and I am not the least bit surprised that it is a big selling point for clients in the US. Apart from language and culture, I would say that Filipinos have a strong work ethic which makes them a good choice for outsourcing jobs.
